What is a Futurity?

A futurity is a monetary prize program for young horses. The Northwest Saddlebred Association futurity is open to registered colts and fillies, beginning in the weanling year and continuing through the 2-year-old year.

Who is eligible to win prizes?

Participants must nominate their foals to be eligible to compete for cash awards beginning in the foal’s weanling year and for every year thereafter through their 2-year-old year.  All payments into the Futurity must be kept up-to-date each year for a horse to remain eligible, unless Buy-In Options are paid. The NWSA has both an Open Futurity for all competitors in several horse show divisions, and an Amateur Futurity for amateur competitors showing in-hand.  Foals must be nominated to each Futurity individually. Who is eligible to participate?

An American Saddlebred foal must be registered with the American Saddlebred Registry and nominated with the NWSA by September 1st.

When are the Futurity classes?

NWSA Futurity classes will be held at the Fall Classic horse show in Eugene, OR, which runs Thursday, September 24-Sunday, September 27, 2026. Further details about when futurity classes will be held is coming soon.
